A 99 and a lighthouse
So it’s Mothering Sunday, a very special day indeed so what better way to celebrate it than head out to Dun Laoghaire. Not only did we want to squeeze in a walk today but also bring Aideen swimming and dine out. The Royal Marine Hotel in Dun Laoighre ticked all of these boxes (research done in advance). There is parking underground and thankfully we got parking on the first level as there is no lift (stairs only) from the second level so this is a bit of a nuisance especially with a buggy.
Commencing our walk there is a pathway suitable for buggies/wheelchairs to the left of the hotel entrance. It’s a short stroll along this gravel path to the main road. A pedestrian walkway runs parallel to the road which is wide and safer than the narrow footpath. However we only noticed this on our return. Pedestrian lights located at the beginning of the pier ensure a safe crossing. From here it’s traffic-free.
With two levels on the pier and a wheel ramp located in the middle, you can vary your walk out and back. Be aware there are no safety barriers between the two levels or by the sea, so great care is needed here with small children. That said there is ample space on both levels for everyone enjoying the pier.
A number of points of interest are dotted along this walk including the Band Stand, the light house, and a canon. Don’t forget no trip to Dun Laoghaire is complete without a famous Teddy’s ice-cream whatever the weather! On arrival at the light house on the upper level, you are treated to a stunning view over Dublin Bay and Howth Head in the distance. On your return journey enjoy the panoramic views of Dun Laoghaire and beyond.

For those not visiting the Royal Marine Hotel there are a number of paid car parks dotted along the main road. Spaces are limited here. Another option is the multi-storey car park also located on the main road beside the coffee shops and Meadows & Byrne shop.
Another great walk to explore with the option to browse around Dun Laoghaire, or head to the People’s Park Markets (on Sundays). We thoroughly enjoyed our experience in the Royal Marine Hotel and would recommend a visit there for a cuppa or more.
