Dramatic lakeside walk

We really struggled to find information regarding walks that could be suitable for a buggy and within a reasonable drive of Lahinch. After a lot of research our quest brought us to Dromore Woods, located in the southeast of the Burren, Co. Clare just outside the small village of Ruan.

As you approach the woods be sure to continue to the main entrance. The road to the car park is quite long, so much so we thought we were driving on one of the walks. However once we eventually reached the car park and  information point we finally realised we were in the right spot.

A map outlines the various walks on offer. We opted for the Castle Trail (2km). The entrance to the trail is very picturesque as you cross a lake over a wooden bridge and arrive at a castle ruin.

This area was a beautiful place to discover, so peaceful and quiet and very much off the beaten track. However this walk was Ultimate Buggy Walking at its best! The path was a gravel one dotted with large rocks, gnarly roots and some inclines to really up the ante. I was very grateful for my Baby Jogger buggy and pneumatic tyres. Strollers probably wouldn’t cut it here. While this walk was a challenging one and not for everyone, I loved it and felt great after the workout it provided.

While there are no changing facilities here and the toilet is a porter loo, if you are in the area it is definitely worth the visit. It is ideal for older children as there is so much exploring to be done here. There is more to be discovered at Dromore Woods. Have you tried out any of the other trails?
